Here's what I'm up to right now
Last updated: September 2026
I’m looking for a remote software engineering role where I can spend more time building backend systems, improving deployments, and making applications easier to operate.
My experience comes from working on production software at HuQAS: maintaining a Django backend, automating reporting, building interfaces, and handling deployment infrastructure. I want to build on that experience and take on more work around reliability, automation, and developer tooling.
Building Sidequestar
I’m building Sidequestar, an app for finding small, worthwhile things to do outside the usual work-and-chores routine.
The idea is to suggest activities based on your mood, available time, and what you feel like doing, then help you follow through.
I’m working on the Go backend. My priority is getting the core experience working from beginning to end: finding a quest, accepting it, completing it, and looking back at what you’ve done.
I’m trying to finish a useful version before giving myself another reason to redesign everything.
Learning Kubernetes by running something real
I’m preparing for the CKAD and learning Kubernetes through hands-on work.
My small workout-tracking project, Fiti, gives me an application to deploy and experiment with. It makes concepts like configuration, storage, health checks, and rollouts easier to understand because I can see what changes and what breaks.
I learn better when there’s something in front of me to build.
Contributing to software I care about
I contribute to Fedora’s Release Schedule Planner. After joining through Outreachy in 2025, I returned as a co-mentor for the May 2026 cohort.
I want to contribute more to projects I use, especially self-hosted applications and tools that help people move their data between services.
I’m also interested in making open-source ticketing more useful for Kenyan organizers through M-Pesa support. I’ve started a pretix plugin, but it is still early work.
Finishing and documenting what I’ve already built
I’m giving more attention to a few existing projects, including my Django query-optimization demo and conference nametag generator.
The goal is to make them easier for someone else to understand and use: clear instructions, honest descriptions of what works, and examples they can try.
I’m also writing more regularly about backend engineering, self-hosting, and open source. Most of the useful ideas come from something I’ve just built, broken, or finally understood.
Away from the keyboard
I’m keeping up with the gym, getting out for hikes, and riding my motorbike when I can.
Sidequestar is partly a reminder to make room for that side of life too.
Working on a self-hosted tool, an interesting backend problem, or a team where this kind of work would fit? Get in touch.
