Software engineer · Backend systems, infrastructure & open source

I build backend systems, automate repetitive work, and run the infrastructure that keeps applications available.

Based in Nairobi, Kenya. I work on laboratory quality assessment software, contribute to Fedora, and build tools people can run themselves. I'm interested in software that gives people more control over their data and fewer services they have to keep paying for.

Open to remote software engineering roles focused on backend systems, infrastructure, and developer tooling.

Selected work

Fedora Release Schedule Planner

Contributing to the tools behind Fedora's release planning.

During my Outreachy internship, I worked on migrating the application from Flask to FastAPI, including API development, validation, and tests. I later returned as an Outreachy co-mentor.

HuQAS Informatics

Building and maintaining software for laboratory quality assessment.

My work spans the Django backend, reporting automation, client interfaces, and deployment infrastructure. A large part of the job is improving an existing system while keeping everyday operations running.

Making Django queries measurable

An interactive demonstration of the N+1 query problem and how to fix it.

Compare optimized and unoptimized queries against the same data, with query counts and timings measured on every page. It is hosted, and backed by tests that stop the optimized endpoints from regressing.

Software I can run myself

I self-host applications on Linux servers and work with Docker, Caddy, and automated deployments.

I'm interested in the whole job: getting an application running, updating it, understanding failures, and recovering when something goes wrong. I write about what I learn along the way.

Currently learning Kubernetes

I'm studying for the Certified Kubernetes Application Developer exam and learning by deploying applications, troubleshooting failures, and understanding how the pieces fit together.

I'm using Fiti, a small workout-tracking API, as a hands-on lab for containers, configuration, storage, and application rollouts.

Writing from the work

Notes on backend engineering, self-hosting, open source, and things I had to figure out by building them.

A little outside the terminal

I hike, ride a motorbike, and help other people get started in open source. Those interests occasionally make their way into my projects and writing.

Let's work together

Looking for someone who can work across application code and the infrastructure around it?

I'm interested in remote backend and infrastructure-focused software engineering roles, and in contributing to useful open-source tools.
