About Me

I'm Antony Nyagah — a software engineer and open source advocate based in Nairobi, Kenya. I build production systems, contribute to open source communities, and help others do the same.

Open Source

I'm a Fedora Project contributor and an Outreachy intern turned co-mentor. I joined the release-schedule-planner as one of 100+ applicants and went on to make 110 commits — migrating the codebase from Flask to FastAPI, integrating Fedora's OIDC authentication, and containerizing the app for OpenShift. After the internship ended, I kept contributing for another year and was invited back as a co-mentor for the next cohort.

I blog about my open source journey, write about burnout and growth, and believe that open source isn't just a licensing choice — it's a strategic advantage: sovereignty, auditability, sustainability.

Work

I'm the engineer behind HuQAS Informatics — a healthcare quality assessment platform serving clinical laboratories across East Africa. I built the modern Nuxt 3 frontend (135+ components, 5 languages), Dockerized the full 9-service infrastructure, set up the GitLab CI/CD pipeline with Traefik reverse proxy, and maintain the Django backend that implements ISO 13528 statistical standards for proficiency testing.

I've also built the HuQAS organizational website (Vue + Strapi CMS), a domain health monitor in Go, a diabetes progression predictor with scikit-learn, and a simple RAG application for augmenting LLMs with custom data.

Learning & Growth

I'm pursuing the CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) certification, learning Rust and Go, and deepening my self-hosting and DevOps skills. Every piece of infrastructure I run is open source — GitLab, Traefik, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Umami analytics. I don't just consume SaaS; I run the stack.

Beyond Code

When I'm not at a keyboard, I'm hiking the trails around Nairobi, riding my bike, or mentoring new contributors through Outreachy. I write about career growth, open source, and occasionally about the view from Mount Longonot.
